Pharrell Williams for Domeau & Pérès - The "Velo" Bike
Sunday, February 13, 2011 at 12:54AM
Pharrell Williams has teamed up with Paris based Domeau & Pérès once again, having previously ventured into design with them to create his 'perspective chairs'. This time around they have created this custom upholstered bicycle.
The bike's frame and fork are hand made in Brooklyn, NY by Brooklyn Machine Works and then shipped to Domeau & Pérès where it takes 100 man hours to upholster the bike with water buffalo leather
by hand.
These bikes are extremely exclusive - "Bikes are available in a variety of leather colors but each color is an edition of one and once purchased that color choice will no longer be available."
The "Velo" bike comes with a €20,000 (£17,000) price tag and is available here.
Personally I can only look at these bikes as a venture in design, and not as an actual mode of transport. Fixed gears were originally pioneered by city bike messengers who needed a simple bicycle that was cheap to maintain. The look has certainly been picked up on by fashion houses and the like, but I think the heart and soul of a fixie has been lost in translation.
What we have here is a beautiful bicycle that belongs in a gallery, that no actual cyclist would buy (even if they could afford to).
